What is Industrial-Organizational Psychology?

Yes, it is the scientific study of human behaviour in organizations.

But… what else?

As you might expect, there are two distinct fields – Industrial and Organizational. Industrial Psychology – the original branch of I-O psychology – is concerned mainly with individual workers and their competencies e.g. recruitment and the development of the company’s employees. On the other hand, Organizational Psychology deals with not only the employees but the organization itself and how they function together; for example, management styles, leadership alignment, and organizational culture. By integrating the two, a robust study of human capital management is implemented– from issues of recruitment & selection and organizational development to mitigating wide-ranging structural changes in companies.

A few topics that I-O Psychologists are interested in:

  • Employee Motivation

  • Leadership Development

  • Talent Management

  • Organizational Culture

  • Workplace Diversity

  • Mental Health & Well-Being
